Our Pet First Aid and CPR class is taught by retired Fire Department, Captain / Paramedic Sue Rutledge. Cptn Sue has more than 30 years of emergency care experience, education in veterinary medicine and certifications in pet first aid and pet CPR, as well as experience in teaching emergency first aid and CPR.
When a person has an emergency, we call 911 and help arrives in minutes. But what if it’s your pet?
According to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), “One out of every four pets would have survived if just one pet first aid technique was applied prior to getting emergency veterinary care.”
Why we recommend an in-person class rather than on-line:
Because people each learn differently; some of us learn by seeing, some by reading, some need to hear the information and many of us learn by doing. In this class all of these methods are used to ensure that everyone comes away from the class with usable information. Online classes don’t provide this and you can’t ask questions or have a discussion about areas of particular concern (for example issues that are common here in AZ). Often times the information online is outdated or just plain wrong.
This 6 hour workshop includes:
How to take your pet’s vital signs
How to safely approach a pet emergency
How to identify and treat shock, trauma, a variety of environmental emergencies, poisoning and some life-threatening medical emergencies that may occur in our pets
Hands-on training includes:
How to apply a muzzle
How to stop bleeding / bandaging
What to do if your pet is choking
How to preform rescue breathing and pet CPR
Students who complete the class will receive certification for Pet First Aid and CPR / certification is valid for 2 years. Pet professionals can receive 6 CEUs per the Professional Animal Care Certification Council (PACCC) and / or 6 CEUs towards International Association of Canine Professionals certification – validation number is on the certification.
Our pets are depending on us to know what to do and to help them in the event of an emergency. When an emergency happens with your pet will you know what to do and be able to provide your pet with the first aid they need to survive?

Practice any and all skills you learn and stay current. Don't be afraid to try different things - pets love enrichment!

I am passionate about pet care! While I can't save every animal, I can make a difference by teaching pet parents and caregivers how they can help the pets they come in contact with.
