Shelter Transport Animal Rescue Team - Valley Village, CA - Los Angeles, CA
Shelter Transport Animal Rescue Team (START) 501C3 non-profit group, rescues animals from overcrowded high-kill Southern and Central California shelters. We transport monthly 125 plus at-risk animals via our customized animal transport RV (The Beast) to fully vetted/contracted organizations in Oregon & Washington, where they are readily adopted into good homes. Since our founding in 2011, we have over 12,500 dogs and 1200 plus cats. We also provide spay/neuter and medical help to the underserved communities in Riverside, Palmdale, Lancaster, Porterville, Delano CA and other areas/people in need.
In addition to our Transport program and Spay/Neuter program to underserved communities and low-income people, START's other programs are:
• "Beyond Borders" program that rescues dogs out of Mexico and Dog Meat Farms in South Korea with the courageous assistance of rescuers there. The Korean dogs serve as ambassadors to spread the word in the United States.
• Grassroots program; assists small rescues with seed money to rescue animals from high kill shelters.
• Pitties Helping Kitties is a designated fund that helps provide money rescue cats and kittens from high-kill shelters.
START first received media attention in July of 2013 when they rescued INDY, a pit bull who’d been burned with fireworks strapped to his body. They provided for INDY’s hospital care and rehabilitation after he went through multiple surgeries with the expert help of the (late) Dr. Richard Grossman of the Grossman Burn Center and Veterinarian Dr. Daniel Slaten. INDY slowly healed and found a forever home and START continues to cover his medical needs to make sure he wants for nothing. START also offered a large reward to apprehend the perpetrator who was later caught and prosecuted.
START members are huge pit-bull fans and saddened by the unfortunate stigma the breed has been subjected to. They try each month to get at least 10% bully breeds on each transport and are fully committed to exceeding that. START has rescued well over 1000 pit-bull /mixes with many becoming service dogs, emotional support dogs and amazing companions who have even joined the Reading For Rover program (Kids read out loud to a dog to help with learning difficulties).
START was awarded platinum status for their commitment to transparency by GuideStar Charity Navigator and has a loyal fan base, which they hope to continue to grow.
START’s innovative Buy A Seat On The Bus (http://startrescue.org/rescue-bus/) program is how these lifesaving transports are funded. Donors, who buy a seat, receive a handwritten Thank You card from the rescued pooch or kitty, including their photo.
The START website (STARTrescue.org) also contains a resource section. There are financial aid sources, veterinarian and hospitals, shelters, first aid hints, adoption guides and much more.
START has a thrift store in an effort to raise needed funds. All proceeds go to START’s life-saving programs.
START is a small group accomplishing BIG things for homeless animals, with a hope for bigger things to come. We are “The Little Engine That Could”. The group of six does amazing things and gets amazing results.
