The Dog Lady - Durham, NC
The Dog Lady is the only 100% force free, positive reinforcement dog training facility in Durham. We offer classes and individual sessions.
There is no licensure for dog trainers in the US. However, Joanne The Dog Lady has two certifications. One, Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed, is the most common in the US. Joanne is also one of a select few in this country to have completed Turid Rugaas' year long certification course. Rugaas was one of the first to study dog body language and to incorporate that understanding in to how she works with dogs.
Classes include KinderPuppy (8 weeks-5+months), Adolescent Dog Training (6-18 months), Better Than Obedience 1 and 2, and Reactive Dog (for dogs who over-react to other dogs or other triggers, especially when on leash).
Coming Soon: Puppy School for puppies too young for daycare; 8 weeks-5+ months. A three day per week play, training, and socialization program.
Individual sessions are for behavior issues and for helping new dogs and puppies adjust to their new families. Jumping, pulling, over-excited greetings, multi-dog households, PTSD, fearfulness, and family dog issues are just some of the things we can help clients with.
The Dog Lady can help you train your dog in the most effective, efficient, and humane way, and you will both have fun doing it!
Please note: Since there is no licensure for dog trainers in any part of the US, it is important to understand the certifications a particular dog trainer holds. For the CPDT-KA, the trainer must have completed 300 hours of direct dog training in a three year period and must pass a 300 question exam. For Turid Rugaas' certification program, students attend seven, four-day workshops over the course of a year, with homework that includes direct training experience, written assignments on dog related topics, training assessments, and a presentation.

What year did you begin serving pets?
How did you hone your craft?
I have taken two courses; the year long Turid Rugaas certification course, and the Karen Pryor Professional course. I also take as many continuing education courses as I can, and have the CPDT-KA certification. This involves a minimum of 300 hours of direct dog training and an exam to ensure the applicants have a comprehensive understanding of Operant and Classical Conditioning, dog husbandry, and dog develpmental stages.
What tip would you give pet parents for working with animals that you've learned as a pro?
It is like any relationship. The more you give, the more you get.
What is one thing you want pet parents to know about you? It can be whatev-fur you'd like!
I have three dogs if my own. My motto is, "Dogs are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole!"
